Time on Legs - Refreshing

What a refreshing day for a run. Cloudy and cool. I took a long one out on the trail listening to my favorite podcast, phedippidations. Today's topic was on runner burn out. It is good to always remember that everything should be taken in moderation. At time we take our goals to seriously and disregard all other things that are important in life. It happens with our careers as well as our sports related hobbies. We can never forget that there are important things in life that need our attention.

So back to my family.....

Time on Legs - Warm Winter Days

Glory be for warm winter days. It has been in the 50s and 60s and I have been able to get outside for a quick run. My weekly mileage has climbed and the trails are clear. We have an excellent trail system in my town for running. Marked at quarter miles and cleared off quickly. I suffered an injury on the treadmill that has seemed to disappear outside. Life is good.

Headed for a Christmas run this weekend and it is supposed to pelt us with snow. Should be fun and it is a short 4 miles.

I love this time of year. Christmas for me is the most wonderful time. I am surrounded by a great family and excellent friends. The spirit that floats in the air invigorates me immensely. My life has been blessed on so many levels and this time of year allows me to take stock and truly appreciate all that has come my way.

Tomorrow should allow for a nice long relaxing run.

Time on Legs - Early morning

As usual for a work day I got up real early so that I could get a long run in on the treadmill. Listened to the Gadget podcast of Steve Runner. Of the 4 gadgets he hit on two of them I want for Christmas. I was going to go for an hour, but slacked off and only did 30 minutes. Somewhere I will find the motivation to carry this on through the winter.

Tomorrow Colorado Springs Police bury one of their own. It is a sad day in Law Enforcement when an officer dies serving his/her community. Take time to pray for those who serve.

A moment of silence...............

Time on Legs - Slacker

Finally I was able to run outside on my favorite trail. We have a great trail system here where I can run as far as I want and never see the same place twice. This run was on Thursday and with my favorite running partner. He was not feeling well so we only did 4. Man was it good to get off the treadmill and on the trail. It was sunny and 28 degrees. Had a great run.

Now for the slacker part. Here it is Saturday evening and I could not make time for a long run and it is back to work tomorrow. Feeling lazy!!

I have never run a marathon and am seriously considering training for the Marine Corps Marathon. As a retired Marine this seems like a good idea. We will see.

Next week is a small race for a local charity. Looking forward to the run.

Time on Legs - Hamster

Today began again at 4:30 AM to get to the workout place and get on treadmill. The wife really thinks I am crazy. I hope I can survive the winter this way. I discovered SteveRunner.com and his weekly podcast. What a great way to work through an hour on the treadmill. This week he discussed an article about how middle of the pack runners have ruined marathons. He does an excellent job of defending and advocating those of us who are not "elite" runners.

I spent 60 minutes at a 9:30 pace with a slight incline on the treadmill for today's run. A little sore after. I have discovered that the treadmill uses muscle groups that my road running has not made sore.

I had heard that the average hamster runs 3 miles a day on their excercise wheels. While I comtemplate life on the treadmill I feel somewhat like that little hamster. All of that running and going nowhere.

A guy does have to put in the miles if e wants to keep in shape for the spring race season. it is after all just time on legs.....

Time on Legs - Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

6 degrees out, are you kidding me!! I woke up today at 4:30 am only to find it so cold out I did not want to leave my warm heating blanket. But, I dragged myself out for an hour long appointment with the treadmill. The wife, by the way, thinks I am crazy for getting up that early. With work starting at 7 I have to get up early.

In an effort to keep myself motivated I tried something new for me. That is the use of a podcast. I found this great podcast done by Steve Runner of www.steverunner.com. As I listened for the hour the minutes ticked by almost without notice. What a great way to spend my run, listening to this podcast. I will do more of that.

The workout was done at 9:30 mile pace with a slight incline on the treadmill. The goal was to get in a long run at an easy pace. Pretty good run overall. Things are looking up for my training on a treadmill through the cold part of the winter.

More to follow......

Time on Legs - Day 1

This is day one of my running blog. This spring I hope to run a mini-marathon (15 Mi.) as well as a couple of half marathons. This will be a regular account of my efforts and struggles through the process.

Because of work I am not able to run during the mid-day much. And since it is winter I will be running a lot inside. Not my favorite way to go, but the only way to run at 4 am when it is very cold outside.

April I hope to run in a half-marathon and 3 weeks later run the mini. I am toying with the idea of a full marathon. We will see about that!

And so it begins.......
